History

After the release of a couple LPs featuring local rock bands, Sunset Alliance Records began in earnest in 1999, when local music lovers Scott Tennent and Steve Lefever collaborated with the then-frontman of Before Braille, Dave Jensen,[1] to create a compilation album for the benefit of a local Phoenix art house and music venue.[2] Shortly after the release of that record, Dave Jensen, who had his own plans to begin an independent record label, was given the reigns of the organization and has led it ever since.[2]

Having completed its first decade of existence, Sunset Alliance remains a small operation that focuses on local artists.[3] However, this has not restrainted the little label from attaining some national success. During those ten years, Sunset Alliance has put out 46 releases, had three bands appear in the popular Emo Diaries series on Deep Elm Records,[4][5][6] and has sent its bands across the nation on concert and music festival tours.

In January 2010, Sunset Alliance celebrated the end of those first ten years with a review show featuring some of its most successful bands, including Before Braille, Fivespeed, The Player Piano, Novi Split, The Letterpress, and special guests Pinewood Derby.[7]

Discography

  • The Retaliation for What They Have Done to Us was a "secret" project started by members of Before Braille while they were still under contract with Aezra Records.[9] They released this recording during that time, and it was later incorporated into the Sunset Alliance catalog.
  • The Rumor was originally released on Aezra Records.[10] Years later, Sunset Alliance purchased the rights to the album and thereafter has included it among its catalog of releases.
